On November 14, 2016, the 27th TWAS General Meeting is held in Kigali, Rwanda. The opening ceremony convenes more than 300 scientists, science ministers, as well as policy leaders of scientific organizations, foundations and non-governmental organizations from over 50 countries and regions around the world. CSIAM president Pingwen Zhang is elected as the Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), one of the 40 new Fellows of TWAS from 17 countries and regions.

The World Academy of Sciences (former name: The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World) was founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world under the leadership of Abdus Salam, the late Pakistani physicist and Nobel laureate. Based in Trieste, Italy, TWAS works to advance science and engineering for sustainable prosperity in the developing world. The TWAS General Meeting, held every year, is a showcase for scientific excellence in the developing world.

Pingwen Zhang is the president of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM), an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, and also a professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences of Peking University. His research interests are: 1. modeling and simulation of soft matter (complex fluids); 2. applied analysis and numerical analysis; 3. moving mesh methods and applications. He has published over 100 papers in such journals as JAMS, SINUM, and PRL. He is also a winner of 2014 National Prize of Natural Sciences (Second-prize), Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing (1999), and Changjiang Professor (2002-present).
